This 2001 Ford SportTrac has the factory equipped Ford# 5r55e.4WD+ISS 5Speed Automatic Transmission; this Transmission evolved from prior c3\c5\a4\4r\5r designs dating from the early 1970s, all were produced at Fords plant in Bordeoux France; this 5r55e subversion was fitted in many 2001~2011 models, typically with V6~4.0L~SOHC Engine & 1354~4WD TransferCase.
This 5r55e came fitted with the P~R~N~D~2~1+OD ColumnShift & "OD OFF" ClusterLamp & 4WDDeep\HiCapacity Pan+Filter:

The 4WD & 2WD subversions of 5r55e Transmissions are NOT interchangable between 2WD & 4WD Vehicles as the 2WD\4WD
TailExtensions are different+unswappable. 1997~1998 5r55e subversions have the OverDriveSpeed\ODSSensor, but it is NOT
used by 1997~1998 Controls & can be left disconnected; they do NOT have an IntermedShaftSpeed\ISSSensor; they DO have
an OutputShaftSpeed\OSSSensor. 1999~2000 5r55e subversions do NOT have either ODSSensor or ISSSensor; they DO have
an OSSSensor. Note all 1997~2000 5r55e subversions are NOT interchangable\swappable into any 2001~2011 Vehicle, as the
later 2001~2011 Controls require the ISSSensor. 2001~2011 5r55e subversions do NOT have an ODSSensor; they DO have the
ISSSensor & OSSSensor; 2001~2011 5r55e subversions can be interchanged\swapped into earlier 1997~2000 Vehicles & will
work as intended with those previous 1997~2000 Controls, the ISSSensor is simply NOT required & can be left disconnected.

Transmission Fluid

ATF Capacity 10q30 9L800. Do NOT use any MerconLV \ SP \ ULV or TypeCVT \ F \ FNR5 Fluid; they will damage Ford 5r55e Transmissions. Only use Fluid labeled Compliant with MerconV spec such as:

ATF MerconV Specs

Transmission Maintenance

For 1995~2002 built 5r55e Transmissions, this one was built late 2000, an apparent consensus amongst
experienced mechanics is the maintenance tasks below be performed to preserve operation & longevity.
Photos & notes should be taken of every part before disassembly+removal as a guide during reassembly.
Use PlasticZipperBags+PermanentMarker to store+tag smaller parts; this keeps them clean & organized.

Items to be done AsSoonAsPossible\ASAP:
~ Have DripPan+ShopRags ready for 4~7qts of Fluid; 2WD ShallowPan has less & 4WD DeepPan has more.
~ Unclip & move the HeatShield off the right PanFlange, then loosen FactoryOE Pan by slowly unscrewing
the 18 FlangeBolts; use a clean ThinBladeScrapper as needed to carefully crack the Flange+Gasket open.
~ Patiently allow Fluid to Drain+Drip to the DripPan; don't be in a hurry to take a Fluid shower; some 1.5qts
can be pumped from the DipStickTube to minimize mess. Loosen+Remove FlangeBolts slowly; allow Fluid
to Drain+Drip. While last FlangeBolt is removed, carefully lower Pan & empty remaining Fluid into DripPan.
~ Measure & note total Pumped+Drained ATF during this procedure as an estimate of refill quarts needed.
~ Factory original Pans were not fitted with Drains; original Pan should be swapped to an aftermarket Pan with DrainBung or Drill+Weld a new Bung to original Pan, then add a Drain MagneticBolt or BrassBallValve.
~ Slowly loosen the 1 Bolt holding Filter to bottom of ValveBody; if required carefully pry Filter loose with its Bolt partially engaged; allow ATF to drain+drip. When drip is stopped, unbolt & remove the Filter & its 2 ORings; again allow Fluid to drain from the ValveBody.
~ Inspect & clean the Pan+Magnet; remove old gasket & clean both Flanges; disect & inspect the Filter; make note of any fines or debris.
